Screen Printing Workshop

Screen Printing is one of the most easy-to-do and versatile forms of traditional printmaking. It lends itself to working with color and allows you to print on any flat surface without the need for a printing press.

In this workshop, Curtis Jones will walk participants through the photo-based screen printing process and then help them print their own unique images on paper, fabric, and/or t-shirts.

Inks, screens, squeegees, and paper will be provided. Participants can submit an image ahead of time and we will have it ready to go on a screen when they arrive.

Build an Atari Punk Console

The purpose of this workshop is to build an “Atari Punk Console,” a simple lo-fi synthesizer resembling sounds from early Atari video game consoles. You will walk away with a handheld battery powered sound device built by you! No experience with soldering or electronics is required. Come make some noise and learn how to solder electronics at the same time!

The workshop will be led by William Davis (@dadasynths), a DIY synthesizer enthusiast and education professor at OU.

$30 Registration Fee. Resonator will provide a soldering iron and all materials.

Resonator is proud to offer this set of exciting, informative and engaging classes for kids and teens. Each class will be project-oriented and yield some form of fantastic creation. They are taught by working artists and art educators and the projects are designed to be educational, fun, and to introduce participants to accessible ideas, materials, and processes that they can build upon in their own time.

June 25: Charcoal Portrait Drawing with Tracy Gibson (Ages 13 - 18)

Charcoal is a material that lets its user to explore light/dark value and line variation with ease. In this class, teens will learn the basics of observational drawing with charcoal as they work from a live model to draw portraits. The instructor will focus on composition, shading, mark-making, and revision as she helps students express themselves with this expressive medium.

$30 course fee. All materials provided. Wear something you don’t mind getting a little messy.

July 2: Experimental Drawing with Haley Prestifilippo (Ages 8 - 18)

Art is fun! In this class kids of all ages will learn to see drawing as a wide-open field of exploration that can be carried out with a wide variety of materials, techniques, and ideas. No rules, just an endless variety of options to explore and results to achieve.

July 16: Laser Cut Linoleum Block Printing with Curtis Jones and Tanner Chambers (ages 8-12)

We’ll be joined by the Pioneer Library System’s Maker Mobile for this one. Kids will draw compositions on iPad tablets, then be able to have to have their drawings carved onto linoleum blocks using the PLS’s laser cutter. Blocks can then be used to print or used as rubber stamps.

$30 course fee. All materials provided. Wear something you don’t mind getting a little messy.

In this class, students will learn to sculpt and create unique images using flat sheets of hand-cut colored glass and a kiln to melt it all together.

Cyanotype is a photographic process that allows you to create images on fabric or paper using the sun as an exposure unit. This class will teach kids how easy and fun this process can be.

July 29 - August 6 (four sessions) Ceramics Workshop with Katherine Gaff, Lauren Dansby, Poet Clark, and Tracy Gibson (ages 8 - 18)

Take a deep dive into ceramics with this multi-session class. The first three sessions will teach and expand on different building techniques, the last session will cover glazing, coloring, and firing. Kids will create a variety of functional and non-functional ceramic objects to decorate the world around them.

Classes will run July 29, July 31, August 5, and August 7.

"Jueju" Poetry Workshop with Jonathan Stalling

Join Professor Jonathan Stalling (University of Oklahoma) for a creative writing workshop to learn how to compose Classical Chinese poetry in English. Stalling will guide participants in a writing workshop coupled with a short outdoor hike to "gather seeds" (words) before returning to "sprout" them into lines and couplets and finally to "plant" these into a full "Jueju," a poem consisting of four lines, each with five to seven single-syllable words, and ending in an AABA rhyme scheme. Participants will then be encouraged to refine and submit their poems to the 2023 Newman Prize for English Jueju for a $500 prize. The deadline for the competition is Feb 15, 2023.

Resonator Kids' Classes 2022

Resonator Kids’ Classes are back!

Do you have a child (roughly 8 to 14 years old…) who needs something fun and affordable to do this summer? Well look no further!

We are proud to offer this set of fun, informative and engaging classes just for kids. Each class will be project-oriented and yield some form of fantastic creation. They are taught by working artists and assisted by a group of parent volunteers and art educators. The projects are designed to be educational, fun, and to introduce kids to accessible ideas, materials, and processes that they can build upon in their own time.

Work created at this year’s kid’s classes will be the centerpiece of Resonator’s second Friday exhibition on August 12!

Inner Wild Child (two sessions- June 21 and August 2, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)

Led by artist Gentry Leach, these classes will teach the concepts of abstract painting using Norman’s fantastic public parks (Andrews and Lions) as the backdrop and inspiration! For each session, participants will meet at the park and start by taking in everything, noting colors, objects, shapes, critters, plants, etc. They will then take these observations and use them as inspiration for their contributions to a large-scale (4 x 4 ft.) collaborative painting. The emphasis will be on creative freedom— there’s no “bad” or “wrong” mark making in abstraction, so the possibilities are endless!

After class, these paintings will be serve as the centerpieces for a culminating group exhibition/event on August 12 celebrating class participants and the work they have created.

Texture Art (June 28, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)

Taught by local artist Denae Smith, this class will show students how to bring their paintings into the third dimension through the skillful use of plaster. They’ll start from a simple drawing, then learn how to mix and apply plaster as part of the painting process. The end result will be work that jumps off the wall!

Improv Quilt Coasters (July 5, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)

Taught by local artist and social worker Renee Jonason, this class helps build creative thinking and problem solving while introducing students to the world of quilting. Using the improvisational method, students will learn to create small quilts (coasters and wall hangings) they can use do adorn their world. In one session, the teacher will instruct students how to thread and operate a sewing machine, design an improv quilt project, and assemble the quilt from start to finish to take home.

This class will be taught by Professor Curtis Jones from the OU School of Visual Arts. It will introduce students to the screen printing process by allowing them to create and print their own images right onto t-shirts, tote bags, pieces of paper, wood, and/or any other flat material we can find hanging around the studio.

Pronto Plate Madness (July 19, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)

With pronto plates, kids can take their simple drawings and turn them into handmade prints. That means not just a drawing for mom and dad’s fridge, but one for Grandma and Grandpa’s, one for each of their friends and family, and one to keep for posterity! Come take Pronto Plate Madness with local artist Wesley Kramer, where you'll learn step by step directions on how to develop and process your image using this easy to learn form of lithography. Fun for all ages!

Ceramic Biomimicry (July 26, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)

In this class, taught by local artist and educator Alicia Smith, students will look at different creatures that seem to straddle the worlds of plant, insect, and animal. They will examine various animal technologies and adaptations and create their own insects inspired these forms using clay. Students will cultivate their curiosity and try their hand at ceramic hand building techniques as they learn about ecology, evolution, divergent thinking, and the importance of following their own path of inquiry.

Stories on Clay (August 9, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)

Join local artist and librarian Katie Pendley for this class that teaches the principles of storytelling via sculpting with clay. After a quick lesson that goes over the seven steps of storytelling and a game that introduces the concept of divergent thought, students will learn to score and slip, roll coils, stamp, paint, wax, and cut clay so that they can translate these stories onto/into ceramic works of art!

Stamp Making (August 16, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)

We’ll round out the summer with a class that’s pure fun! Students will learn the basics of stamp making, one of the most versatile and easy-to-do forms of printmaking there is. The lesson will teach participants to draw, carve, and make small rubber stamps that they can then use to transfer infinite copies of their drawing onto the things around them. Taught by local artist Juan Jaimes, this class will show kids how rubber stamps can be used to augment drawings, watercolors, pre-printed items, and almost anything else they create.

Experimental Drawing

Taught by artist Eunice Carter, this class will be a fun and free-form exploration of mark-making with a variety of materials. The emphasis will be on exploring ideas and using drawing as a fantastic entry point to the world of imagination.


Sticker Making

(1:30 to 4:30 on July 20)

Homemade stickers are a great way for kids to share their work with each other and decorate the objects in their lives with images that make them unique and personalized. In this class, artist Wesley Kramer will lead participants on a trip through the world of DIY sticker making and show them several fun ways to make and reproduce stickers.


T-Shirt Printing

(1:30 - 4:30 on July 27)

This class will be taught by Professor Curtis Jones from the OU School of Visual Arts. It will introduce students to the screen printing process by allowing them to create and print their own images right onto t-shirts, tote bags, pieces of paper, wood, and/or any other flat material we can find hanging around the studio.

Spacey Space Space!

(9:30 - 12:30 on August 3)

Lead by Resonator contributor, DEI consultant, and media designer Ashley Morrison, this class will explore the fascinating world of dioramas and teach kids how they can create a universe of their own right inside a shoebox! Participants will be utilizing upcycled materials and create future-inspired compositions that turn their everyday shoeboxes into out-of-this-world wonderlands. This will be a 3-hour morning session that will feature a background screening of a futuristic film, and conclude with a light lunch and and student presentations where participants can tell the group a little bit about themselves and what inspired their creativity for the shoebox diorama.

And… all dioramas made during the workshop will be exhibited in Resonator’s September Exhibition Diversity University !!

Create Your Realm

(9:30 - 12:30 on August 10)

Students explore the fantastical and imaginative in this class taught by artist and Creaturealm artist/co-founder Nick Lillard. Using recycled plastics, students will each build their own self-conceived mystical ‘creature’ to be arranged with those of their classmates into a collaborative composition within a life-sized diorama box. This multi-part process will fascinate and entertain participants as it teaches them fundamental principles of design, light construction, installation, lighting, and working collaboratively.

Explore the wonders of photopolymer plate etching in this beginning level workshop. Turn your photos, drawings and dreams in to fine art prints! Photopolymer plates are light sensitive plates that are exposed with a positive transparency and washed in water to create a matrix that can be inked and printed on paper. In this class we will be using a computer to produce transparencies, exposing the plates and printing them by hand on an etching press. All materials provided, additional plates may be purchased at Resonator. 2 days, 5 hours first day of instruction, second day for working on projects. $50 will cover 2 small plates

For one Saturday a month we will discuss and apply automotive theory in a safe space through a queer feminist lens. In addition to automotive science, we will address homophobia, transphobia, racism, and misogyny in the auto repair industry, learn to feel empowered through acquired skills, and feel more able to navigate the barriers present in the field.

This two-dqy workshop will introduce you to photo-process screenprinting. You’ll work with non-toxic and water-based materials to learn the basic techniques and principles that govern the process. Instruction will focus on demystifying screenprinting— highlighting its versatility, and giving you the confidence you need to set up and print in any space, no matter what the facilities.

The first day will feature instruction and demonstration of the sreenprinting process from start to finish. The second day will be a studio day in which students will have a chance to create prints of their own.

Experimental Printmaking with Liena Bondare and Paulis Liepa

Join Latvian artists Liena Bondare and Paulis Liepa for this one-time workshop featuring alternative processes and materials for use in collagraph, screen printing, and other print processes.

Liena Bondare is a mixed media and installation artist who utilizes screen printing in much of her work. Instead of seeing screen printing as simply a vehicle to reproduce graphic images, Bondare uses it to create moods and atmospheres more often associated with lithography, etching, or painting. In the workshop, she will go over the materials and techniques she relies on to achieve her stunning imagery.

Paulis Liepa is an artist and designer whose bold print work speaks the languages of fine art, pop graphics, and vintage advertising in equal measure. Using a variety of methods and materials, he produces imagery that jumps of the page with saturated color and deceivingly simple form (that is actually quite complex and involved on closer inspection.) In the workshop, he will demonstrate some of the collagraphic materials and techniques that come together in his work.

Activities:

1. The instructor will show documentation of his own collective artworks & public interventions.

4. Participants will participate in performance exercises. The exercises will help bond the group and clarify social concerns shared by members of the workshop group.

5. In art space, participants will make performances dealing with different concerns. Participants will articulate the expectations for patron's behavior and the actual behavior of the patron during the performance.

6. Workshop participants will work as a collective to conceptualize and implement a group performance.

7. Live performances at event that evening.

Figure Drawing Basics: Sessions 1 and 2

This month we’ll be getting back to basics. Maybe it's been a long time since you've drawn from the model and want to sharpen up, or if you love drawing but don't even know where to begin this course is for you. We’ll cover gesture drawing, using abstract shapes to construct figures, using geometric solids, foreshortening, perspective, and balance. Brief mentions of line weight, mark-making, and how to use value will be included.

Session 1 - 10am - 1pm     $50
Session 2 - 2pm - 5pm      $50

Sign up for either session or both. Each student, in each session will have one-on-one instruction as we work through our drawings.

You will need:
18x24 drawing paper, 18x24 News print, a drawing board suitable for paper of that size, soft charcoal, drawing pencils and an eraser. Some spare supplies will be provided, but please bring what you need to work.

Class limit: 10

This course will focus on the perils of drawing in the long form, and cultivating endurance in your practice. Many non-collegiate students of drawing have never had more than an hour to work on a drawing, and sometimes time is truly a factor for learning and success. After a brief introduction and the selection of a pose, our focus will be to invest in a long form drawing, with the purpose of making a thoroughly investigative piece of art, not just a study.

Materials: Please bring your own paper and drawing boards, with either vine charcoal and charcoal pencils or graphite pencils. If you've taken a class with Craig before, any charcoal or pencils you have left over should be more than adequate. Some materials may be provided by the instructor.

Paper Lithography Workshop

Taught by Michael Wilson of Crazytooth Press

Paper lithography is easily one of my favorite monotype techniques! Using paper as a plate you can transfer laser printed or hand drawn images to printmaking paper with oil based ink. This technique is perfect for high contrast photos, drawings and type. It works similarly to traditional or polyester plate lithography, but uses less expensive and more accessible materials.

Class is $50 which covers a materials fee of $15.
Included: inks, modifiers, 2 sheets of Stonehenge paper 22”x30”, printing equipment, laser printer, limited access to a computer.

Students need to bring: at least 1 photographic image to work with either printed out or on a flash drive, clothes or apron for messy work, a laptop if you have one with image processing software of your choice (not necessary but helpful).

You will learn

1. How the process works, limitations and advantages.

2. How to prepare your images to use for the process.

3. How to mix the ink and other materials used.

4. How to print your images

In this course we'll look at the structures of the head, and talk about how to create a convincing likeness, when drawing from a live model. We'll be looking at technical issues such as structure and perspective but also how to create drama and narrative through materials, posture, and contrast. Some of the more complicated aspects of using charcoal and pencil to create lifelike effects on paper will also be covered.

Materials: Please bring your own paper and drawing boards, with either vine charcoal and charcoal pencils or graphite pencils. If you've taken a class with Craig before, any charcoal or pencils you have left over should be more than adequate. Some materials may be provided by the instructor.

Food as Community Practice

Based on the Ayurvedic and yogic belief that food is responsible for an individual's physical, mental, spiritual development and the source of vitality, resident artist B. Ajay Sharma leads participants through sessions in meditation, yoga, conversation, and food preparation, and eating. The performances will illuminate the connections between these disciplines and draw upon the power of knowledge, generosity, and compassion to give participants a sense of the power of this interconnectedness.

Sessions start at 5:30 p.m. and last till about 8:30 p.m.

Figure Drawing with Craig Swan

Description:

This six hour course will focus on how to use an understanding of human anatomy to make more compelling and accurate figure drawings. The course will begin with a lecture portion where the instructor will explain on the model key anatomical structures, and how to apply them in our drawings. Remaining time will be spent creating drawings of various lengths applying those concepts. The purpose of learning anatomy is to buttress ones sensibilities with knowledge that can be applied universally.

Materials: 

Bring your own drawing supplies, paper and drawing boards. If you've taken a class with me before, any charcoal or pencils you have should be more than adequate. If you have questions or would like to experiment using charcoal with a toned paper let me know and I can help you. I'll bring some extra charcoal and things just in case.

Zine Making 101 with Eric Piper

Want to make a zine? Let us show you some options and get your creativity flowing! All ages welcome.

The workshop will run from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sun Sept. 24 at 1010 N. University Blvd, Norman, OK 73069.

Instructor will show personal zine work.
Instructor will show large collection of others’ zine work.
Instructor will demonstrate creating a zine from start to finish in traditional and experimental styles.
Participants learn tradition and experimental zine creating techniques.
Participants will participant in several creative writing and drawing exercises.
Participants all create from start to finish at least one zine.
Participants learn to make zines anyplace and anytime in the future.
Class will discuss ethics and the relationships that exist between zines and society and how to distribute and share finished work.

ABOUT INSTRUCTOR

Eric Piper is an interdisciplinary artist. He is director and a founding member of Resonator Institute an experimental art space in Norman, Oklahoma. He received his BFA in Sculpture and Printmaking from University of Oklahoma in 2013.

Piper exhibits, teaches, and helps organize collaborative experimental art festivals, installations and events at home and internationally in collaboration with art collectives Resonator Institute, Diverse Universe and Academia NonGrata.
Currently he is working on opening an alternative arts school and fine arts publishing company in collaboration with Resonator Institute.


Participants should bring any notebook, journals or sketchbooks to work in and pull inspiration from. Space will provide access to printer, scanner and art supplies, and all materials necessary for the workshop
